My Opinion on Gay Reality TV
Okay. It seems like every time I watch Headline News or go to Advocate.Com, there's some new opinion on Queer Eye and Boy Meets Boy. So here's mine, since I haven't seen it voiced anywhere yet.
Thursday, Sept. 04, 2003 - 10:23 pm Honestly, I don't know exactly how I feel about Boy Meets Boy. I hate the silly dating show premise (though I'm still waiting for the follow up articles that talk about James and Wes marrying in Toronto ;-) and it was cruel to put the straight guys in without warning, but it did show that gay men are just like straight men: diverse. Most of you know that I *completely* thought Dan was gay, and I was convinced Franklin was as well. I mean, as soon as we found out Brian was the straight one I told Britt that must have meant Wes was the straight one and I was going to cry. But no. It was Franklin. So the guys on BMB were from all walks of life, careers both stereotypically gay and straight (remember the guy from the first episode who was gay and in the army?) the straight ones acted gay, the gay ones acted straight... Why is there anything inherently wrong with showing that? Perhaps there were better methods than shitty reality shows, but that's what society wants right now. No one ever said people were smart. So that brings us to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I think people have more problems with this show because it so blatantly plays on the sterotypes of gay men. The argument against that concept is that these guys aren't actors playing the part of a stereotypical gay men. The Fab 5 are playing themselves. If you don't like that, tough. They aren't 'gay-ifying' straight men by any means. Hell, fashion standards from men are changing and taking their cues from formerly gay-only fashion ideals, like going to the gym and body waxing. The Fab 5 are helping the straight guys pick up their image by building on what's already in the guy's wardrobe. I don't think I've seen an episode yet where they didn't pull a piece of clothing or two from the guy's closet and saved it, or even used it in the outfit for the evening's big event. Hm. Incoherent rambling. Remind me not to turn in any papers that are as disjointed as this. I've been writing too many entries lately. I need some homework. --Angela -
