EMU
Spent the last two days at Eastern. It rocked. It rocked lots and lots.
Wednesday, Aug. 06, 2003 - 11:55 am The first building we went to was, of course, the theatre building (Quirk). We walk towards the hallway with offices and a few classrooms and what's the first thing I see? A bulletin board with a bumper sticker on it that says "I'm Straight But Not Narrow". Every door in that hall had at least one postage-stamp sized pride flag sticker on it. I'm going to love this place. The main theatre, Quirk, has a huge ass ammount of fly space. And the entire stage is trappable. So that means people/sets can go through the stage at any point, rather than the blocking or setting being placed around the trap. I can't wait to work in there. The smaller theatre, Sponberg, rocks as well. It used to be an outdoor amphitheatre, so the back wall is the former outter wall of the building. There's still '70s grafitti on that wall that they haven't been able to get off, lol. i want to do a show like RENT in that theatre. Something edgy and with a minimalist set. The audition opportunities are already lining up right and left for me. Auditions for the first three mainstage shows (An Italian Straw Hat, In The Blood and The Secret Garden) are going to be within the first week of school, and an audition has already been arranged for me with Encore, which is the on-campus touring company (nothing major, but to area high schools and community events). Also, Gramma Gail's acting mentor, Ken Stevens (sp), is doing some sort of musical performance...and he needs a soprano. And wants me to audition for it. Now, I haven't heard that officially from him, but that's what Gail was telling me on the ride home. Ken is also a former owner of the Red Barn. It was a small world couple of days because yesterday when we had breakfast with Dennis Beagen (head of Theatre and Communication Arts department), he brought along some other woman (never caught what her position was) that grew up in the same town as my mom! In fact, my mom probably had this woman's mother-in-law for a kindergarten teacher. Craziness. Let's see...what else went on...spent yesterday on a huge walking tour of the campus...then had lunch with a couple of theatre students (Crystal is funny, lol), then signed up for my classes. I managed to get classes only Monday-Thursday, because the forensics team requests that Friday afternoons remain free for traveling and that sort of thing (I can earn credit for forensics! ~happy dance~). So on Monday and Wednesday I have some honors computer course at 8 (eeeeeewwwwww) then...Psychology of Sex. On Tuesday and Thursdays I have Fundamentals of Speech, Fundamentals of Acting and Introduction to Sociology. I get to take all these fun classes because I got waived out of a shitload of required classes. For example, between my ACT scores and my AP scores, I already have credit in English Composition. Then my ACT scores were (miraculously) high enough to waive me from math. I also don't have to take Psych 101, so that's why I get to go on to taking psych classes that apply to my minor (women's studies) and next semester I'm hopefully going to be able to take psych of women. Or maybe I'll wait a bit for that one...can't take all my fun classes my first year.... Still need to e-mail Dennis though and find out about a couple of things. Like some scholarships that aren't showing up on my financial aid stuff. And what about gym and foreign language classes. If I really do need to take a foreign language, I need to start that this year, or I'll forget all my German. Gail thinks I should be able to test out but...while I may have gotten 'A's throughout German, German is a slacker class where you can get an A for showing up every day and not pissing off the teacher. I loved it (except when we had to take the damn notes on the damn movies. Or had to take a quiz I couldn't intimidate Herr out of ;-) but it was so easy I probably didn't get a very comprehensive German education. And it's been four months since I've had to do anything with German. Except making up random phrases with improper grammar, lol. I might be double minoring, with Women's Studies and Musical Theatre...though my academic advisor (who is on crack, and used to teach at Hope, so adding to the small world-ness of the day) thinks that I won't be able to do that because you can't usually major and minor in the same department. Never mind that the theatre people gave me the sheet that said what classes a musical theatre minor needs to take with a theatre arts major. ~shakes head~ But, in order to do the musical theatre minor, you need to take the second level of jazz, tap, ballet and modern dance. I know I can't do any of those. So I'll need to take the first level of all those classes, and if I don't need to take a ton of gym classes...I'm gonna end up with too many credits. Argh. ~stab~ So. Anyway. Did you all have a fun couple of days without me? Poor Britt went through withdrawal, lol. So did I, hon. So now we're making up for it with a day without other people or garage sale shit...though she's actually playing my Sims game right now, lol. Oooh! Know what my mom told me? Ms. Forner's not at the high school anymore!!! ~happy dance~ Of course, this is bad for the two people left at that school who want to do forensics...but I'm sure everyone else is happy. If I was staying on this side of the state, I would see what I could do about taking the job...but y'know what? I'm going to be three hours away in Ypsilanti. ~evil grin~ I'll miss you all. But I'll call. I'll write. Though every Tuesday night I'm calling Britt 'cause we need to have our Queer Eye date, lol. Hm...okay...I think I'm through everything that happened this weekend that can be discussed in here ;-) Yeah, it sounds all scandalous...but really it's just a case of me being way too pissed off to write about it. Britt and April know what I'm talking about. ~killstabmaim the subject of my anger~ I'm going to stop using Britt's yicky straight keyboard now. The shift key keeps sticking. It's pissing me off. --Ange -
