I'm Ready For My Close Up!
Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 - 12:07 am

Auditioned for Close Up tonight. It rocked. The whole audition was improv.

First we were in small groups and did some what if questions (Chris and Cameron will recognize these: if you could hypnotize anyone, who and why and the most memorable night of your life), then played "what are you doing?" Where you do an action, the next person asks "what are you doing?" and you tell them something completely different and they have to do that different action. Very fun. We played it in Acting class yesterday. Some crazy stuff. Then we got some A/B scenes like we did at Foley's auditioning workshop last year. I worked with this guy, Patrick, and we did a scene between vampires, lol (he remembered my name 'cause 'Angel' is short for 'Angela' and Angel reminded him of vampires, as in Buffy. Yeah, I thought that was kinda roundabout too). I played a ditzy vampire. And I hissed! Yay!

Anyway, we performed these scenes for the group as a whole (about 20 people at that audition. Last names starting with A-L at 6 tonight and tomorrow, M-Z at 7 tonight and tomorrow). Then we had to do soapbox speeches where we had 30 seconds to say something about ourselves. Anything.

Lots of people were obviously uncomfortable with that. I wasn't really. I went right up there, told them my personal philosophy of "it doesn't matter who you love just so long as you do" and why it's so important to me: Holland is a small conservative city and I was one of 5 or 6 openly gay people in my high school so I had to remind myself that there was nothing "wrong" with me, so long as I found people to love (in a completely non-sexual way or another way). So yeah. Outted myself to a bunch of people tonight. Was shaking as soon as I stepped off that soapbox, my heart about beating through my chest.

The irony is, I've now been assigned a monologue for the Y.E.S. performance that includes the line "coming out is so annoying!" which is exactly what I was thinking as I left the CloseUp audition.

I'm liking Project Y.E.S. a lot. There are so many theatre opportunities here I hate having to choose. Like I might not get into Close Up simply because I have to rehearse occassionally for the mainstage show when CloseUp will be auditioning (Sunday and Wednesday nights). Blah.

I think I'm gonna head to bed. Look over my speech a bit. G'night.
