Stupid Perfectionist Children/Vocal Directors
But first: Holly made the play ~happy dance~
Monday, Jun. 09, 2003 - 10:18 pm Okay, but seriously, if I ever talk about doing kids theatre again, shoot me. Please. The small children...gah! The number of questions...the repetition...the inability to extrapolate information...my head was going to explode. Though I feel sorry for one kid. He's probably the oldest guy in the production, 12 or 13, so his voice is beginning to change and he can't sing nearly as high as the other boys, but the neurotic vocal director is making him sing high. Dah. Neurotic vocal director. She kept giving me notes on things I was already doing. The other older girls were noticing it too. I mean, she was telling us to breathe after one measure of singing. And she was demonstrating these breaths with huge gasps, with shoulder action and everything. The small children in the room are going to have to undo years of bad training when they get into choir. All because of this psycho director. Stab. By the end of the night she was letting up on me and letting me sing (~gasp~) full phrases in one breath! Counted songs tonight. There are 11 songs in the show, not eight, but I do indeed sing 4 of them. And they're allcountry songs, lol, which Nicole will never let me hear the end of, I"m sure. The good thing is they're all (well, the two I sang tonight, "Nouns" and "Preamble") perfectly in my belt range, so I get to have lots of fun with them. The bad thing is that whenever we split in to parts, I'm always harmony (SHR has to be the only show ever written where sopranos aren't melody. Ever) and mostly singing right on my break. Or at least where the break was after a day of belting songs (I was feeling bummed again today so I hauled out a song book and sang "Rose's Turn" several times. Sounds great, but that much belting is bad for the voide). Spent Mrs. Iverson's gift today. Bought the Rocky Horror Show soundtrack (Daphne Rubin-Vega! As Magenta! Life is complete!) and the Chicago Movie song book. So within the week I'm going to have the music for Cell Block Tango, Roxie and all the other kick ass songs. 'Cause this isn't just "selections from", this is ever song in the movie, plus that stupid song from the credits, lol. The Tony's rocked last night. Anyone who didn't watch them...should have. A gay couple won the Tony for best book of a musical (Hairspray)! And one of them stood up there, with is arm around the other man, and said "This is the man I love. We can't get married in this world, I don't know why. But I want everyone to know that I love (other guy's name)" And they kissed!!! It was so cool. People were referencing back to it all night. The next winner came up and said "Uh, I think I just saw two guys kissing on CBS. Cool." And later on a woman talked about how great it was to be a member of the theatre community "We have men kissing, drag queens and children. What a great world to live in." Except for the children part, I agreed completely (the drag queen reference was to Harry Fierstein who won for best lead actor in Hairspray by playing a woman). And I swear "A Year with Frog and Toad" has to be one of the slashiest shows ever on Broadway. If it wasn't based on a series of children's books, I'd say Frog and Toad (both men) were obviously together. The song they sang...oh my goodness. So yeah. Good night for the theatre. A woman shorter than me won the Tony for best actress in a musical. She rocks. I must get the soundtrack for Hairspray...eventually. And as soon as "Take Me Out" launches a national tour, we need to have a GSA field trip to see it. It's about a baseball player (on a team very evocative of the Yankees) coming out as gay in the height of his career. It sounds great. The guy has a line...I can't remember exactly how it goes, but it rocks. Something like "If I'm going to have sex - an I am because I'm famous and handsome and successful and it's like a law - I'd rather have it with men. But mostly I just like to play ball." I read that to Britt before I got to the last half, and she realized that the last part has so many inuendos in it. It's amusing. The first part, however, is all me ;-) Um. Okay. I think I'm done. --Angela -
